Dyslexia Awareness Week 2020

6th October 2020C Edwards

This week is ‘Dyslexia Awareness Week 2020’.

5 Facts about Dyslexia
– Dyslexia affects between 10 – 20% of people.
– Dyslexia is not related to intelligence.
– There is no single type of dyslexia. It is unique for every person.
– Early identification is important.
– There are lots of different strategies which can be used to support people with dyslexia.

What is Dyslexia?
– It’s a specific learning difficulty, which means it causes problems with certain abilities used for learning, such as reading and writing.
– Unlike a learning disability, intelligence isn’t affected.
– It’s estimated up to 1 in every 10 people in the UK has some degree of dyslexia.
– Dyslexia is a lifelong problem that can present challenges on a daily basis, but support is available to improve reading and writing skills and help those with the problem be successful at school and work.

What are the signs of Dyslexia?
Signs of dyslexia usually become apparent when a child starts school and begins to focus more on learning how to read and write.

A person with dyslexia may:

– read and write very slowly
– confuse the order of letters in words
– put letters the wrong way round (such as writing “b” instead of “d”)
– have poor or inconsistent spelling
– understand information when told verbally, but have difficulty with information that’s written down
– find it hard to carry out a sequence of directions
– struggle with planning and organisation

But people with dyslexia often have good skills in other areas, such as creative thinking and problem solving.

If you have any concerns regarding your child, please speak to their class teacher or email [email protected]

To mark the week, Nessy are offering a free course for teachers, parents and anyone who would like to find out more information about dyslexia. To find out more, click here to add the ‘Understanding Dyslexia’ course to your cart. Then use the code ‘TEACHME’ to receive the course for free.

Year 2 Glitter Bugs

27th September 2020M Gilbert

In Science this week our Year 2 scientists investigated how microscopic bugs can spread and more importantly, how we can remove bugs and germs from our skin. For the experiment, Year 2  investigated which method is best to remove grease and germs from our hands. They spread hand-cream into their hands and added the fun germs(glitter) then they wiped, rinsed or used warm water and soap to investigate which method safely removed most microscopic bugs, Which method do you think work best? Why not ask Year 2?

Show and Tell Reminder

24th September 2020M Hanratty

Every Friday our Nursery children will be given the opportunity to take part in ‘Show and Tell’.  Communication and Language is a major part of the EYFS curriculum and we have found that children are always enthusiastic to talk about something familiar from home.

Previously, we have asked the children to bring something to school that they would like to share with the class. We have had artwork, photographs of special events, meaningful toys and many more wonderful items. Due to current restrictions we are trying to limit what comes into the classroom.  So this term, if your child would like to take part in ‘Show and Tell’ all you need to do is email a photograph of the object or a video of what it can do.  It could even be a video of a new skill they have learnt.  All photographs and videos should be sent to mhanratty@marsdenprimary.org.uk before each Friday.

This week in Year One we have started our new topic ‘Once Upon A Fairy Tale’. This week we have read The Three Little Pigs.

In English we have sequenced the story and made a wolf wanted poster. We have also had lots of fun building houses for the pigs and exploring our environment.
