Design and technology at Marsden Primary aims to inspire pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation, and evaluation.
We want pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their work and the work of others.
Through our scheme of work, we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.
We offer opportunity for children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Maths, Science and Art. Skills are taught progressively and enable pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets in the National Curriculum

Y5 Adapting a Recipe- Spaghetti Bolognese

What a busy day! Y5 have been adapting a recipe for spaghetti bolognese. They could choose their own ingredients and then they cooked it. We even designed our own labels for our finished products.

Y3 Canopic Jars

To link in with their Ancient Egypt topic, Y3 made canopic jars in DT using disposable cups.

They added their own hieroglyphics to give them an authentic feel.

Fabulous Ferriss Wheels!

In DT Year 2 have created Ferriss Wheels as part of their DT unit. They designed, built and evaluated their wheels. We are so proud of their creations! Well done Year 2!

Testing Bridges Y5

Today Year 5 completed the construction of their bridges and we put them to the test!

The children used all their knowledge from previous sessions about corrugation, lamination and the strength different shapes bring to structures.

All bridges managed to hold over 1kg with some holding nearly 3kg!

Truss Bridges Y5

This week in DT, Y5 studies the structure of truss bridges and how they use triangular shapes for strength and stability. We had a go at building our own in pairs and next week we are going to test them by adding weights.

This half in DT, Y5 have started to look at bridges and how they are structured. Mrs Potter started this topic off by exploring different shapes and techniques which could be used to give them study structures.

Year 1 Windmills

5th November 2025S Hume

Year 1 have been exploring the local area and after a visit to the windmill, we looked at different types of windmills and their parts. We then designed and made our very own windmills with moving sails. We think they are wonderful!

Year 2 DT – Making Chairs

In DT in Year 2 we have been working on building a chair for a bear. This week we completed our chairs and tested their strength and stability

Year 2 DT- Engineers

Today in DT Year 2 their challenge was to see if they could build a chair structure using only paper. At first we thought it was impossible! However the children realised that if you made the paper into cylinders it would be stronger. Everyone worked in a team and every team was able to put a book on the top! Some could even hold all 22 books! Well done!

Year 5 Kitchen

14th July 2025M Hanratty

Today, the Year 5 classroom turned itself into an Italian kitchen as we put our recipes to the test. Everybody made spaghetti bolognese but some groups added in different vegetables and we even had someone make a vegetarian version! I was very impressed at how well the children followed the health and safety rules regarding raw meat and personal hygiene.
