One of the challenges this week for Nursery and Reception children was to make their own musical instrument to use when clapping for our NHS and Key Workers tonight.

We had some spare paper plates in the kitchen so I turned them into a game of go fish. I put the the numbers 1-5 on the plates (two of each number) and turned them upside down so we couldn’t see the numbers. Pick two plates to turn over and if they match you keep the plates. You could use numbers, dots or a mixture to test is you can match numeral to quantity.
You could use pieces of paper instead of plates and draw fish on them to make them more colourful and creative.
More confident children could use larger numbers and older children could have addition/subtraction problems and answers e.g. one plate has 2+1 on and another with 3 on.
KS1/2 children could use this game to test multiplication and division facts. If you are feeling super confident you could even put equivalent fractions on the plates.

A simple, effective way of improving fine motor skills. Tape some of their toys to a door or window and the children must rescue the toys by peeling the tape off. You can make it more challenging by adding layers of tape going in different directions.

The Department for Education have produced a series of free online lessons to support the teaching of phonics at home for Reception and Year One children.
The resources are specifically designed by experts for use by parents, carers and teachers during the Covid-19 period. The lessons also follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics scheme, which we use in school.
New lessons will be uploaded every week day during the summer term at these times:
10am – Reception – Suitable for children who can blend and read words such as ‘fish’, ‘chat’ and ‘rain’
10:30am – Year 1 – Suitable for children who can confidently blend and read words such as ‘stamp’, ‘chair’ and ‘green’
11am – Learning to Blend – extra blending practise for children in Reception and Year 1

A really straightforward, minimal resources needed, hours of fun game to help improve hand eye coordination.
Just tape pieces of paper to the floor making an arch and see if your child can get the ball through the tunnel. You can make it harder by making the arches smaller or adding more in a row. Add numbers to test their numeral recognition by seeing if they can roll the ball through the correct tunnel.
Older children could give each arch a certain amount of points depending on difficultly or starting point for the roll. They can then add up the scores as you play.
As well as looking after our physical health, it is also important to look after our mental well-being; especially during these unprecedented times.
