Marsden Engineers Race in Greenpower Final

28th June 2019M O'Brien

Thursday 27th June 2019 finally arrived for  Marsden Primary School Young Engineers, who built their own racing kit car , designed a bodywork and then tested the car in preparation for their big day at Gateshead Stadium racing against 39 other schools.

The team were well-prepared and looked smart in the red racing overalls.

The day was a super occasion and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Special thanks must go to Mr Payne who was our mechanic and ‘roadie’, carrying the car and the equipment to and from the venue and, to Mrs Danjoux who helped to supervise the children throughout the day.  Coffees for the staff and cakes for the children were provided by Mrs Lee and these gave us all a welcome ‘sugar boost’.l done Team Marsden and the Marsden Bullet for your effort and hard work over the year and on the day.

Engineers work on selecting and testing materials for the racing car

17th May 2019M O'Brien

Right. What shall we test first?

Cutting plastic bottles to find a straight face.

Take care with that Stanley Knife!

How to attach plastic cardboard.

Curving the plastic might strengthen it.

Trying out a different method of cutting.

Carefully does it.

Try bending the plastic to fix it to the cardboard.

This was found to be a good way to strengthen the plastic and card.

The group agreed that this plastic-covered card would be stronger and more eco-friendly as it re-used materials.

In today’s session of Engineering Club, the group were given to challenge to find suitable materials to use as the bodywork for our racing car. They had the option to make it from Correx (manufactured corrugated plastic) or experiment with recyclable materials to make an eco-bodywork.

Here you can see some of the children at work experimenting with a mixture of used cardboard and plastic from large pop bottles.

Marsden Primary School Young Engineers complete the chassis

11th March 2019M O'Brien

The seven members of the Young Engineers club completed the chassis this week and are ready to check and test the electrical wiring.

The club meets each Thursday after school and have worked as a team to follow the design plan and get the car completed. Last week our Engineer Ambassador Mike Lambert who organises the regional car programme for Greenpower Goblin, came along to check the chassis and to help with the wiring.

Work on the motor wiring begins.

Young Engineers Start to build the car.

15th November 2018M O'Brien

The Young Engineers have started to build the car and have really stuck into the role of engineers. Tools at the ready, they have used the design plan to help get on with the long process of building the car.

Oscar and Amelia work on bolting one of the side supports to the main chassis.

Sarah-Ann and Amelia start to bolt parts of the chassis together.

Good teamwork by the boys and girls helps.

Young Engineers get started

5th October 2018M O'Brien

Marsden’s Young Engineers have started their work this year by dismantling last year’s car- and what a keen lot we have too!

This week some of last year’s group with our current team visited the ‘Bring it On’ Science and engineering event at the newly opened Beacon of Light School in Sunderland.

Working out energy requirements in a home

Health and safety on the Metro track.

Teamwork comes first.

Understanding bridge construction.

Egyptian engineers created magnificent pyramids- let’s explore one!

Ready to start work.

Learning more about the properties of air.

I like driving in my car… it’s not quite a Jaguar.

Every nut, bolt and washer must go into the correct box ready for the re-build.
