Marsden’s Got Talent

16th June 2018M Hanratty

Wow, step aside Britain’s Got Talent because we have some new talent!
The children put on amazing performances including singing, dancing, music and much more.

All of the acts were mesmerising but the judges made their final decision on who to send through to the final of Whitburn’s Got Talent:

For Foundation Stage: Aimee-Rose’s show dance.
For Key Stage One: Leah-Mae singing a Thousand Dreams from “The Greatest Showman”.
For Lower Key Stage Two: Tristan singing in Spanish.
For Upper Key Stage Two: Melissa and Fredrico playing the piano.

Good luck to all of the contestants in the final.

Year Six are amazed by local retired miners

15th June 2018M O'Brien

On Wednesday of this week, year six children met with three retired miners who had all worked at Westoe Colliery.

The visitors were in school as part of a project to help young people learn more about the industrial and social heritage of our area.

The miners explained what it was like to work down a mine, how important coal was nationally at an industrial and at a domestic level and how mining communities had grown up and declined in the North East.

The children listened well and engaged enthusiastically with the miners who each told their stories and gave accurate facts about our rich mining heritage. The event signalled forthcoming opening of the St. Hilda’s Pit heritage Centre in South Shields.

This was a worthwhile experience which all of the children enjoyed.  Thank you to Jacky, Jerry and Jimmy.

One of the miners explains the value of The Davey Lamp in keeping miners safe underground.

The pit shovel has many uses- not just for holding coal!

The children had prepared a wide range of questions about life as a miner. Here the miners are being quizzed.

Independent Choices

15th June 2018M O'Brien

This week, a visitor from South Tyneside Council spoke to the children of Year Six about making decisions when travelling on their own.

As the children prepare to leave Marsden Primary School and move up to the secondary school, parents and carers often give them more freedom as to where they visit and how they travel there.

The children were informed of and discussed the practicalities of travelling unaccompanied on bus, metro, by bike or on foot.

On Friday 8th June, Year Six went to South Marine park to take part in an adventure activity event for local schools. It was a fun day based around orienteering and involving a range of other challenge activities as they went round the course.
