As many of you will know, we are gathered here today for the Grand Opening of Marsden Primary School’s Grandad’s Library.
As we shared today, Suzanne Robertson, who many of you may know as Abigail and Lucie’s Grandma became a part of our Governing body and asked me if there was anything I wanted for the school…I said a library! and so the journey started.
Suzanne and her husband Gordon were out in the streets of the village, leafleting parents, residents and anyone else who was passing, beginning our library fund. Unfortunately fate took hold and Gordon became very poorly with cancer. At this point the library was put on hold whilst Suzanne and all of her family had a chance to focus on what was important and give Gordon all of the care he needed. This journey was hard for everybody and in March this year Gordon sadly passed away.
At this point, GRANDAD’S LIBARAY was born. We were so honoured to have this last memory for our children but also it is a way of thanking the Robertson family for all of their hardwork.
Since March we have had so much support it has been amazing, a special mention needs to go to the Foyle’s foundation who through the hard work of Suzanne and Mrs O’Brien we have been given £6000 to spend on books. Suzanne also worked her magic on South Shield’s library and all of the furniture that was in the old library in South Shields is now here at Marsden. Mrs Chrisp has taken on the role of librarian and has work tirelessly to ensure all of the books are cataloged and the library is ready to be used. A final mention needs to go to Mrs Potter, who has amazed everyone with how she has changed our prefab from a drab building to a work of art with characters painted on the wall from so many book characters.
I am sure you will agree that this is an amazing asset to our school and one that I know will grow and grow.
