This is a simple and fun task you can complete at home to get your little ones used to recognising and dealing with money in multiples-save all of your change!
All you need is a tin can or a metal pot (even an old bean or soup tin will do!). If counting in multiples of 2s, you will need 2p coins, multiples of 5, 5p coins etc.
This works well for counting in 50s and 100s in Year 3.
Tell your child that they need to close their eyes and listen very carefully as you will be dropping 1/2/5/10ps into the money pot.
They have to listen to how many coins have dropped into the pot. When you are finished, they write down the amount of money they think is in the pot. For example £1.20 or 120 pence. £5 or 500 pence.
If you have more than one child, it can be a great activity for them to do together. One child can turn their back to listen to the coins the other child is dropping into the tin. They can both then check if the answer is correct by taking the coins out and counting in the multiples together.
Keep safe!
