Due to the current climate, we are all spending increasing amounts of time online, whether it be for home schooling, contacting relatives or friends or accessing social media.
To help protect children both online and offline, Northumbria Police would like to highlight their free ‘ThinkuKnow’ online safety programme, which is designed to help children of all ages stay safe online.
The programme is separated into different categories and targets different age groups. There are also resources for parents and carers which could assist home learning.

There are lots of online platforms available to support young people with SEND.
BBC Bitesize have created a SEND toolkit to support parents during the Corona Virus pandemic.
‘Empowering Little Minds’ provides ideas and resources for sensory and
messy play, aimed at children aged 2 – 10 years old.
‘Singing Hands’ is a YouTube channel which uses features Makaton songs and rhymes.
‘Relax Kids’ provides a free ‘Calm Pack’, which includes advice for children, parents and carers.
South Tyneside Local Offer provides resources, advice and links to external agencies to support parents and young people with SEND.
The Government have also produced a list of online resources, aimed to support learning across the curriculum for all children. This includes links to charities to support Mental Health, Speech and Language and many other areas too.
A visual timetable is a great way to show children their routine for the morning, afternoon or even whole day.
We use them in school to show children their sequence of lessons and include time for their areas of interest, such as playing with cars, to use as a reward for completing focus activities.
I’ve included some examples that can be printed out, but you could also draw pictures or encourage older children to create their own timetables to use throughout the day.
For younger children a ‘Now/Then’ or a ‘Now/Next’ board is also a useful way to motivate them to complete an activity. As the ‘Then/ Next’ part of the board could be a reward for completing the task that you would like them to do first.
To support home schooling, the BBC have launched a new programme which consists of three daily lessons. They also have a range of activities and games that can be accessed at any time for children aged 3 – 16.
The initiative starts from today and can be found at BBC Bitesize.
Have fun!
During these challenging times, it’s really difficult trying to find the balance with everything that is going on.
In case you are feeling worried or apprehensive about home schooling, everything on this list also counts as learning (and some will happen every day without you even realising! 😊)
🌈 Try not to put too much pressure on yourself and remember to stay safe. 🌈
These resources have been produced by South Tyneside CCG and South Tyneside Council to support children’s Mental Health.
There are also a range of resources and information which can be found on the South Tyneside Local Offer.

As children have had to cope with lots of changes recently, it can be a very worrying time as they may not understand what is happening. Children with SEND may find this particularly challenging as it has had a significant impact on their daily routines and lifestyles.
In these stories, Dave the Dog and Underdogg help to explain about Coronavirus in a child-friendly way.
They could also be used to explain why children can no longer visit relatives, go to school or go out to play with friends.
