The Nursery children were very concerned when they found out Goldilocks had eaten all of Baby Bear’s porridge so we jumped to the rescue. We counted out three spoonfuls of oats and poured in the milk, taking turns around the table. They did a great job of following instructions and loved being able to pick some yummy toppings to add to their own portion!
Today Year 3 investigated how far they could throw and collected their results. The children were excellent at measuring and collected their results accurately.
Do we have the next Olympic Champion in our class?
For the last four weeks, some of our EYFS families have taking part in some Fun with Maths sessions run by the Northern Learning Trust. They have been super stars 🌟
Year 4 began to explore equivalent fractions with an interactive fraction wall. The children began to spot patterns and realised that their times tables facts will come in useful when they begin to work out equivalents!
This week, we set the Nursery a very difficult task of sharing some jewels with a cuddly friend to have a picnic. Mrs. Elliott couldn’t believe how good the children were at suggesting ways to solve the problem and investigate all the different possible ways of sharing.
She was particularly impressed by two children, Grace S and Finn, who used advanced mathematical vocabulary to explain what they were doing.
Grace S commented, “We need to halve the jewels to share them”
Finn noted, “We need to halve the jewels in the middle so we get the same on each side.”
Even when Mrs. Elliott tried to trick the pair by giving them an odd number, they shared the jewels equally and said they didn’t need the odd jewel or it wouldn’t be fair.
Year 4 have had a great time exploring and comparing the area of shapes. We’ve loved the practical elements of this topic and we can’t wait to complete our investigation tomorrow!
This week during Number Time, Nursery have been focusing on using positional language and representing number.
Mrs Elliott took the children through the school on a Spooky Hunt to find Halloween creatures. Every time they discovered a creature, they made a mark on their hunt sheet. The children were very focused and talked about where the creatures were hiding.
Mrs Hanratty worked with the children on extending their positional vocabulary. We stuck the characters from our Magic Monday story, Room on the Broom, and then described were they were all sitting. The children were encouraged to use vocabulary such as “in front”, “behind”, “on top”, “below” and were even challenged to use “in between”.
Check out a selection of our work below 😀
DIn Maths Year 1 have been comparing different amounts. We have used lots of different objects and even made our own crocodile teeth to help us! Well done Year 1.
