Year 6 make Lifestyle Choices

By M O'Brien11th October 2016

On Tuesday, Year six took part in two workshops in school led by a local charity Lifestyle Choices, on how to keep our hearts healthy and how a heart functions. This involved finding out more about diet, what makes up a healthy diet and how to make a a healthy smoothie!
Some of us liked the smoothies better than others!

In the afternoon we learned about the function of the heart and had the opportunity to see inside real lambs hearts, identifying various sections and hearing how they work as part of the circulatory system. The children were amazed at the experience.

Year 2 have been busy!

By S Hume10th October 2016

It has been a busy time in Year 2.

In English, we have loved reading The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.

We wrote letters to the crayons to try and help sort their problems out.

We are now reading The Day the Crayons Came Home and have new problems to solve!

In Mathematics, we have enjoyed making maths monsters to improve our knowledge of numbers.

In Art, we have explored primary colours and recreated work by the artist Mondrian.

Finally, in Geography, we have begun learning about our world.

Year Six Humanities Learning Walk

By M O'Brien5th October 2016

On Thursday 29th September, Year Six walked down to Whitburn to find out about the buildings that were there during World War Two and to visit the Parish Church to find out more about rituals and ceremonies in the Christian Church. We were met there by Reverend Davies who told us and showed us the different places and parts of the church and why they were used. Some of us were amazed to find out that our local church was build around 1245.

We also found out about the vestments or special clothes that are worn by the vicar and the members of the choir. Why do they he wear them?  Traditionally to keep themselves warm and clean! Special colours represent different times of the year such as Lent, Advent, Christmas and Easter.

We found out about the bread and wine used in communion services and what these would be served in.

We had a fascinating time looking around, asking questions and even getting to dress in some of the vestments- no bread and wine though. Perhaps when we are older.

Year 5 Mental Madness!

By L Fyall5th October 2016

This week in year 5 we have been focusing upon common multiples. The aim of the game was to roll a dice with your partner and identify multiples of the number shown, whoever did it the fastest was the winner. We repeated this process using different colours and identified common multiples of numbers to 12. We had great fun and showed fantastic improvements with our times table knowledge.

Macmillan Coffee Morning 2016

By C Marshall3rd October 2016

On Friday afternoon we were so pleased to welcome Parents and Grandparents into our school hall to raise money for the worthy cause of Macmillan.

The donations from parents were outstanding, added to the cakes made by the teachers we had an amazing spread. Everybody seemed to enjoy the chance to have a chilled hour away from their busy lives and top up their sugar levels whilst donating their money.

A special thank you needs to go to Mrs Elliott for all of her hard work and organisation skills.

The money is has been counted and we managed to raise a stunning £390. Thank you so much for coming together to support this very important charity.
