To celebrate World Number Day (08.03.2023), we decided to hold our own Maths Rockstar Day. We took part in different challenges ranging from numeral recognition in Nursery, Numbots activities in Reception and KS1, right up to TTRockstars Battles in KS2. The winners in KS2 were allowed to pick an adult to compete against live in the hall. Of course the children were the fastest thinkers and were victorious over staff. There were also prizes for best Best Dressed and Best Air Guitarist.
To complete our topic of the Great Fire, Year 1 went back in time to 1666. We experienced a range of activities from the past and even learnt all about their punishments too! Our favorite activities of the day were tasting Thomas Farriner’s bread and ink writing. Then in the afternoon we jumped back into our time machines and had a visit from South Shields Fire and Rescue service, they showed us how to be safe around fire and even let us have a look inside the engine!
On Thursday, we celebrated our love of reading by sharing books together with our friends. The children thoroughly enjoyed reading together and getting lost in the imaginative worlds.
We also shared the text “The Dot” across the whole school and completed a wide range of activities linked to dots and believing in ourselves. Each year group shared their work in Assembly.
Nursery/Year 3 Shared Reading
Reception/Year 6 Shared Reading
Year 2/Year 5 Shared Reading
Year 1/Year 4 Shared Reading
Today Year 3 visited Whitburn Methodist Church as part of their RE topic. We have been looking at Christian worship in our local area. The children loved visiting the church and especially enjoyed singing.
Year 6 were very excited today as they all received their leaver hoodies.
We think they look fantastic!
Following our winter break, the Y6 boys were back in action last night. They were really excited to get going again but had a tough 3 fixtures on the night. It was a mixed bag of results with the boys adding a win, loss and draw to our results so far this season. With one round of fixtures left, we are looking forward to seeing how high up the league we can finish!
Today, Year 5 visited Nissan to take part in their Code Club session. We learned how to program our robots to complete tasks and follow routes around the factory and also got to watch how real robots work on the factory floor! We were treated to juice, cookies and a pen and blue tooth speaker to take home!
As part of their topic on sculpture, Y4 recycled old plastic bottles to make maracas. They looked at West African instrument designs to inspire their own decorations on the maracas.
In DT, Y4 children each made a slingshot car. They built the chassis and launch mechanism using lolly sticks, hot glue and tape. They designed their own car bodies and constructed and assembled them independently. They the. Had fun testing the cars and racing them against each other.
