Y5 have loved their text this half term, Beowulf.
On Wednesday, we acted out the epic poem by taking on a role. They were King Hrothgar, Brave Beowulf, Fiendish Grendel and an unfortunate guard. This will help us to write our narrative retelling next week.
Can you tell who is acting out which role?

Today, Y5 carried out an experiment to explore the process of filtration to try and separate an insoluble material (tea leaves) from a solvent (water). The children had a variety of different materials to use as filters and we discovered that some were more successful than others. Material with very small holes such as woven fabric acted as a good filter and resulted in very few leaves getting through the material. We called what was left in the material the residue.
Over the last couple of weeks, Year 3 have been working hard in our English lessons to write our first piece of writing of the year. We all wrote a character description about the boy who had lost his black hat. Last week, we were finally at the stage where we could publish our writing in order to showcase the fantastic vocabulary we included and the edits we made.
Year 6 and Reception had an afternoon at Laura’s Park – everyone had a great time – special friendships are starting to form.
Today, we walked down to Whitburn Church to celebrate our Harvest Festival. There was some fantastic singing from all our Choir and the rest of the school. Thank you for all the kind donations which will be taken to Hospitality and Hope.
In maths this week, we have been ordering and comparing numbers to 1,000,000!
To help us get started, we played a game where we rolled the dice to make a 4 digit number and then had to work out where it would go on the number line. We tried different number lines out to make it trickier as we first had to work out what the intervals were going up in.
This week, Y5 used their knowledge of dissolving to see if the temperature of water affected how quickly sugar dissolves in water. We made sure to use the scientific names for each stage/item. We know the water is the solvent, sugar is the solute and the finished mixture is called a solution.
We correctly predicted that hot water would dissolve the sugar quicker.
This week, Y5 started a new English text called Beowulf. It is an epic poem about a Danish kingdom which is being terrorised by a foul fiend named Grendel.
Today we put our selves in the shoes of King Hrothgar and the children took turn to ask each other questions in role about the situation. We have some excellent actors and interviewers in Y5!
Year 3 have had a fabulous time starting the juniors. We are settling in well and enjoying getting stuck into our learning. We have been using base 10 to help with our maths, going outside to do our art and enjoying our PE lessons ➕
This afternoon, we completed our first experiment in Y5 by testing materials to see if they are soluble or insoluble.
The children were surprised that oil floated to the top proving that it was insoluble in water.
